A Healthier Version of Snow Cones
Summer time is snow cone season and for good reason! This delightful snack can help keep us cool and hydrated on those blistering hot days. There’s just one issue… the list of ingredients in snow cone syrup can be super-scary and many children can have adverse reactions to them. A typical list of the syrup ingredients include water, high fructose corn syrup, citric acid, artificial flavor, propylene glycol, sodium benzoate (preservative), sodium saccharin, xanthan gum, FD&C blue #1.
To enjoy a healthier version of this summertime treat and get more nutrients, make it with fresh fruit juice instead. There is just no need for all of the unwanted chemicals when you can make this special treat just as sweet with juice or a blend of fruit sauce poured over the shaved ice.
You Will Need:
juiced fruit, store-bought fruit juice concentrate, or blended fruit smoothie
fresh fruit, whip cream, or sprinkles for toppings
cups, cones, spoons
After shaving your ice in either a blender or snow cone machine, you will next decide whether to juice your own fruit or use store-bought for convenience. If you would like a thicker and creamier version of this treat, you can put all of your fruit into a blender and make a smoothie to pour over your shaved ice. Any of these options are wonderful ways to add variety to the healthier version of the snow cone.
This time we had selected store bought fruit juice concentrate with the SunBeam Igloo Snow Cone Maker. The kids poured the juice over their shaved ice and chose to sprinkle fresh blueberries on top. They enjoyed creating their own and even experimented with mixing flavors. There are many different ways to make a snow cone and several different machines to choose from other than using the blender.
